Fish and Wildlife Service says the most compelling alleged sighting since then was in 2004 in Arkansas. The last commonly agreed-upon sighting of an ivory-billed woodpecker was 77 years ago in Louisiana. Now, the nation's Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to remove the bird from the Endangered Species Act due to extinction. The bird lived in Cuba and the southeastern United States, including Florida. The United States' largest woodpecker may soon be declared extinct. ![]()
